Nalini Shekar, Founder & Director
Nalini is a co–founder of Hasiru Dala, the wastepickers’ non-profit organization in Bangalore. Previously she was a co-founder of Kagad, Kach Kashtakari Panchayat (KKPKP), the union of wastepickers in Pune and Co-ordinator of the national Alliance of Indian Wastepickers. Nalini is a pioneer in advocating for wastepicker rights. She has trained hundreds of waste pickers, municipal officials and elected representatives on zero waste practices and integration of informal workers in solid waste management. Nalini lived in the US for a decade working on human trafficking and child labour issues. Her work resulted in policy changes and the passing of legislation to support victims of human trafficking. Nalini has won many awards including an Honor by the San Jose City Government, a certificate of Honor from Governor of California, Mr. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Star award from Asian Community in the San Francisco Bay Area, a finalist at the Numma Bengalurur award and Bangalore city’s Kempe Gowda award 2014.
Shekar Prabhakar ,Co-Founder & Managing Director
Shekar has been brought in to lead the scale up of operations. He is a Professor and business executive with over 28 years experience in developing business for IT products, solutions and consulting services. Expertise spans product and solution marketing, P&L operations, business development and sales in startup, growth and Fortune 500 companies. He has been teaching marketing in a business school for the past 5 years. He is a graduate of IIT, Madras and IIM, Calcutta.
Marwan Abubaker, Co-Founder & Director - Operations
Marwan is Director of Operations and is responsible for day to day management of the Waste Picker Franchise teams. He has twelve years experience across diverse sectors including agriculture, waste management and community radio services. Marwan is an active member of the Solid Waste Management Roundtable (SWMRT) in Bangalore, that works to promote decentralized waste management in the city. He he took up the initiate to pilot the first Dry Waste Collection Center in HSR Layout in 2011. This pilot project, helped establish the case for for Neighbourhood Dry Waste Collection Centers. He has co-authored a paper on the Informal Waste Workers Contribution in Bangalore”, to determine their economic contribution to the city.
